Professional profile:
Deborah co-founded the NZ Endometriosis Foundation Inc. (now ENZ) in 1985 and is currently Chief Executive. She led the organisation from a patient-based regional support group in 1985 to a national organisation which was registered as a Charitable Trust in January 1994.
She has been responsible for the development of the organisation’s structure, strategic planning and funding and has initiated and implemented unique and innovative projects in many outreach campaigns.
Deborah has been instrumental in raising awareness of endometriosis and its far-reaching consequences on quality of life and fertility in New Zealand and overseas. She has organised, chaired and presented at numerous regional, national and international meetings and has a reputation as a skilled, expert and engaging speaker in her field.
In 1997 she developed the now internationally acclaimed adolescent ME(Menstrual Health and Endometriosis) school educational programme. The success of this has prompted major changes directly addressing the unacceptable diagnostic delay of endometriosis and dramatically improving health outcomes for young women. Longitudinal research studies are providing the basis for influencing global understanding. ME was selected as finalist in the 2007 Health Innovation Awards.
Deborah has developed a world-leading, comprehensive patient partnering programme, developed at Oxford Clinic Women’s Health where she is a specialist Patient Advisor and an advocate of a multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to treatment. The success of this has resulted in her appointment to other private health clinics throughout the country. The curriculum for the private clinic patient programme was the base of her developing the ENZ public hospital Patient Partnering Project which was developed, trialled and implemented at Christchurch Women’s Hospital in 2004.
She was instrumental in bringing this programme about by fostering co-operation and collaboration between the public and private health sectors. Hr current focus is to export it to other hospitals throughout the country and because of its success, encourage its global application.
